How to Get your Parents/Guardians/Grandparents to Fill the Book

"This is the most common worry amongst our buyers. You have to realize that this is a deeply emotional book, not just for you but for your parents. You can take a further step by handing it over and asking them to answer just the first question while you are still in the room. Almost nobody who starts puts it down. The only way this book fails is if it never gets opened."

What's the Book All About?

"I Want to Have Your Story" by Elderspoke is a personalized guided journal you give to a parent or grandparent. Inside are questions most families never get to. Not surface questions. The ones that make someone stop and remember who they were before they became the person you know.

They fill it in by hand, in their own time. What comes back is a book in their handwriting that cannot be replaced, redownloaded, or reordered. One copy with their voice on paper.

Each book is printed to order. Please allow 2 to 7 business days for order processing and book printing, plus an additional up to 7 business days for shipping. Usually, we ship before then, except on high-volume days.

How it Works

How "I Want to Have Your Story" By Elderspoke Works

Pick the journal that fits: Dad, Mom, Grandpa, or Grandma. Add your family's name to the cover to make it personalised

Hand them the book. They fill it in whenever they feel like it, at the kitchen table, on a quiet afternoon, in the middle of the night when a memory surfaces. There is no deadline and no wrong answer.

You Keep It Forever: What comes back is a book no one else in the world will ever own. Their life, in their handwriting, in their voice. It sits on your shelf long after the voice itself is gone.

  Step 1

When to Give It

Every Family Has a Story That Deserves to Be Told

There are conversations every family means to have. The kind where you ask your mother or your father to tell you everything: how they grew up, who they loved, what they lost, what they carried quietly for decades because no one ever thought to ask.

Most families never have it. Not for lack of caring, but because the questions feel too large to ask across a kitchen table on an ordinary Tuesday.

Elderspoke makes the moment for you. One hundred and fifty questions, bound with your family's name on the cover, answered alone and in their own time, so that what comes back is a book in their handwriting, in the hand your children will recognise long after the voice is gone.

You don't need an occasion. You need the book on their table, and the willingness to say: I want to know who you were before I knew you.

Inside the book

A whole life, in six chapters

Over 165 questions. The grandparent editions carry a seventh.

Where you began The house, the street, the year, the people already there.
Who you loved first Before our family existed. The ones nobody ever asked about.
Work, money, fear What it actually cost, and what you never said out loud.
The family you made The day you became a parent, and everything it changed in you.
What you lost The things carried quietly for decades.
What you'd want us to know The last chapter. Most families read this one first.
Grandpa and Grandma editions only The ones before Your own parents, and theirs. The names that disappear if nobody writes them down.

"I gave this to my dad for his 65th and told him there was no rush. He started it that same night. Every time I visit now he has a new page to show me. Last week he read me what he wrote about the summer he worked on a fishing boat in Alaska. I have known this man my entire life and I had never heard that story. Not once. He is on question 60 something and he keeps saying he is going to need more room."

"My mother is 71 and she has answered exactly two questions a day since the day it arrived. She does it at the kitchen table with her coffee before anyone else is up. She will not let me read any of it until she is done. When I asked her why she said 'because you are going to want to talk about it and I am not finished thinking.' That answer alone told me this book is doing something."

Marcus Thompson

"I bought the Grandpa edition and drove it over to my grandfather myself because I wanted to see his face. He read the front cover, read his own name printed on it, and then just held it for a while without saying anything. Then he asked me to sit down and go through the first chapter with him. We sat there for two hours. He is 81. I have never had a conversation with him like that in thirty-two years."

A note from the founder

Why Elderspoke exists

I was eleven when my mother died. It happened on my sister's birthday.

What I know about her, I know secondhand. An aunt tells me one version. Someone at a burial tells me another. People describe a woman I am supposed to recognise and I nod, because what else do you do. I do not talk to my cousins much, so even that thin supply dried up.

I have a mother assembled out of other people's memories, and not one sentence of it is in her own words.

I have thought for years about what I would give to have a book she filled in herself. Not photographs. Not the stories other people tell about her. Her handwriting. Her account of her own life. What she was afraid of at twenty. What she got wrong and would have warned me about. Who she was before she was anybody's mother.

I would have read it at eighteen, when I had no idea what I was doing. I would have read it again at twenty-five. I would be reading it now.

That book does not exist, and it never will. That is the whole reason this company does.

Elderspoke makes one thing. A guided journal with your parent's or grandparent's name printed on the cover, holding the questions nobody thinks to ask on an ordinary Tuesday. They fill it in by hand, in their own time. No app, no login, no deadline.

What comes back cannot be reordered or redownloaded. One copy, in their handwriting.

If you are waiting for a birthday or a holiday to give it, please do not wait. I am not writing that to sell you something. I am writing it because I know exactly what the other side of waiting looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does delivery take?

Every Elderspoke journal is printed after you place your order, because each cover is personalised with your family's name. Please allow 10 to 14 business days for standard delivery. If you need your book sooner, priority shipping is available at checkout and reduces the total time to approximately 5 to 8 business days.

What is inside the book?

Over 150 guided questions arranged in a specific order. The earlier questions are light and easy to answer, covering childhood memories, favourites, and small details most people have never been asked about. The later questions go deeper into regrets, wishes, fears, and the things your parent has carried quietly for decades. Every question has additional space for longer answers, and every question can be skipped without guilt.

What if my parent is not a writer?

That is the most common concern, and it is also the reason the book works the way it does. Your parent does not need to write an essay. Most questions need one or two sentences. Some need a single word. The book is not asking them to be a writer. It is asking them to remember, and that is something anyone can do.

Can I personalise the cover?

Yes. Every book is printed with your family's name on the cover. You enter the name during checkout and it becomes part of the printed cover, not a label or an insert.

What if I want books for both parents?

Most families order two. You can select any combination of Dad, Mom, Grandpa, and Grandma as separate journals, each personalised individually.

Can I ship directly to my parent?

Yes. Enter their address at checkout and the book will be shipped to them. Many families choose to hand it over in person, but direct shipping is available if distance is a factor.

A thoughtfully designed memory journal that helps families preserve their loved ones' stories. Customers praised the 'thick, creamy paper' and high-quality construction. The prompts are deep and meaningful, encouraging reflection on life experiences. Families reported emotional bonding experiences, with one noting 'this book asks things my own wife never asked in 54 years.'

We are immigrants and I never got to really understand a lot about where I come from, the kind of childhood we had before we left for the US. Buying this book for my dad would hopefully help with that. I have also recommended this to my friends.

We ordered all four. Both parents and both grandparents. Watching four of them work through these at different speeds has been the best thing that has happened in our family in years. My grandfather told me on the phone that this book asks him things his own wife never asked him in fifty four years. He did not say it sadly. He said it like he was glad someone finally did.

My mother in law has had this on her side table since March. She does one question whenever she feels like it, sometimes none for a week. There is no deadline on it and that is exactly why she has kept going. Every other memory thing we tried made her feel behind. This one just sits there and waits for her.

It arrived faster than I expected and the quality is not what I assumed for the price. Thick cream paper, matte cover, my dad's name printed right on the front. He is a retired engineer and does not do sentimental things, but he told me that seeing his own name on it made him feel like he had to take it seriously. He has been at it every evening for a week.

We bought all four. Dad, Mom, Grandpa, Grandma. The grandparents are in their 80s and we know we do not have unlimited time. All four of them are filling theirs in. My grandfather called me last week and said 'this book asks me things my own wife never asked me.' He sounded happy. Not emotional. Just happy that someone finally wanted to know. That phone call alone was worth it.

The quality of this book surprised me. The questions are not surface level 'what is your favourite colour' nonsense. They ask real things. Hard things. Things my father has never been asked by anyone in his life. The paper is thick and creamy, the cover feels expensive, and the fact that his name is printed right there on the front made him take it seriously. He said 'if someone put my name on it, I suppose I have to do it properly.' He is on chapter four.

My mom is 74 and has early stage memory loss. I ordered this book because I was terrified of losing her stories. She sits with it every afternoon while I am at work. Some days she writes a lot. Some days she writes two sentences. But every word she puts down is a word I get to keep. Her handwriting is getting shakier but she is determined to finish it. She told me she wants her grandchildren to know who she was before she was 'grandma.' I cannot recommend this enough.

I was nervous my dad would think it was silly. He is a retired engineer. He does not do sentimental. He filled the entire book in nine days. NINE DAYS. He said he stayed up past midnight three times because he could not stop writing. My favourite thing he wrote is under a question about regrets. He said his only regret is that nobody gave him this book twenty years ago when his own father was still alive. I ordered the Grandma edition for my grandmother the next morning.

We ordered the Mom and Dad set as a Christmas gift for my wife's parents. Her father finished his in two weeks. Her mother is still working on hers because she writes two pages for every question. When we sat down and read them both, we realized her parents had answered some of the same questions completely differently. Same marriage, fifty years, two totally different memories of the same events. That alone was worth every cent.

I gifted this to my mom last Christmas. Found her crying happy tears while writing in it last week. She said some questions make her remember things she hasn't thought about in 50 years! Now my kids will know their grandma's whole story, in her own words. Just beautiful.
